The UNCF Walk for Education is a broad-based community fundraising event in which you can recruit individuals, family members, friends and co-workers to participate in the non-competitive Walk to raise much needed funds for UNCF. The only competition is for the prizes, which goes to the team captains based upon the amount of funds raised. Please join us at the 26th Annual 5K Walk for Education. Our silver anniversary was a wonderful event and accomplishment with all of teams support. The Detroit 25th Anniversary Walk for Education was the first in UNCF history to gross and net more than $500,000; helping us to maintain our #1 fundraising Walk within UNCF for three years running.

2014 is significant for UNCF as we celebrate our 70th Anniversary. So the celebration will continue on beautiful Belle Isle. Our theme this year is, “Building Better Futures: The Value of a UNCF Investment”. Come out and join us on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at the Belle Isle Casino as we walk to help kids get to and through college. If you cannot attend, no worries; sign up as a “Virtual Walker”, so not matter where you are in Michigan or around the world, you will be with us in spirit.

A mind is a terrible thing to waste, but a wonderful thing to invest in. Help us reach our fundraising goal of $625,000 to support scholarships for Michigan students. We will work our bodies with the 3.1 mile walk around beautiful Belle Isle (now a State of Michigan Park) and refresh our spirit with family, friends, and conversation on a beautiful summer day. We need your support and assistance to reach our fundraising goal and we need your participation to reach our walker goal of 2,000. We want UNCF scholarship recipients and alumni who attended or graduated from our member schools to join us this year to show the return on the UNCF investment by sporting your “I Am Your Dividend” sign.

Here are the 2014 executive chairs:

  • Joya Shepard - Personnel Director, General Motors Company
  • Inda James - Pre Production BOM Analyst, Ford Motor Company
  • Daphne Harris  Assistant Vice President & Administrator, The Chrysler Foundation
  • Anthony Johnson, President, African American Alliance Metropolitan Detroit, Henkel Corporation
  • Marvin Rushing  Vice President/District Manager, Comerica Bank
